The adventure drama film, The Count of Monte Cristo was released in 2002, starring Jim Caviezel, Guy Pierce and Richard Harris. It is about a young sailor, who is betrayed and falsely imprisoned by his jealous “friends”, he escapes and seeks revenge. Most of the film is shot in Malta, that features Birgu Waterfront, Mdina, Comino and many other places.

The film released in 1978 is a prison drama film starring Brad Davis, Irene Miracle, Bo Hopkins, Paolo Bonacelli, Randy Quaid, Norbert Weisser, Paul L Smith, Paul Jeffrey and John Hurt. The film is based on a young american student, Billy Hayes who was sent to a Turkish Prison for trying to smuggle hashish out of Turkey and his escape. The entire film was shot in Malta in Luqa Airport and Fort St. Elmo in Valletta.


A historical drama and political thriller, Munich was released in 2005. The film starring Eric Bana and Daniel Craig is about the Israeli government secret team that track down and kill the alleged Palestinans, who had murdered eleven athletes in the 1972 Summer Olympics. The film was produced and directed by Steven Spielberg which include Valletta, Bugibba and Sliema as some of the filming locations.


U-571 is a war film released in 2000, directed by Jonathan Mostow, that stars Matthew McConaughey, Bill Paxton, Harvey Keitel, Thomas Kretschmann and Jon Bon Jovi. It is about disguised American Submariners who board a German Submarine in order to take the Enigma cipher machine. This film was shot using the water tanks at the the film studios in Kalkara, which are amongst the largest in the world offering a natural sea horizon as a backdrop.

An upcoming film, an american drama written and directed by Angelina Jolie. The films starrs Brad Pitt as well as Angelina Jolie as the main actors. It is about an unhappy couple that travel to France in the 1970s, as they spend time with fellow travelers and locals, the couple begin to come to terms with unresolved issues in their lives. The film location for this film is in Mgarr ix-Xini, Gozo. This upcoming film, By the sea is set to be released on November 13, 2015.
